Finding Your Own Shoes to Walk In

The Cobbler

Finally, an enjoyable comedy. Why did this movie get such a bad rap from the critics? My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by this fun movie. It held our interest, was entertaining and it had a good message. The theme: “Sometimes walking in another man’s shoes is the only way to discover who you really are.”

Movie Review -The Cobbler

The basic plot goes like this: A cobbler who has begrudgingly inherited his father’s business feels bored of his every-day life. He’s a little more than bored though, he’s wondering what his true purpose is and what he’s missed out on. He’s a good son, Max (Adam Sandler), who has taken care of his mother since his father mysteriously disappeared or ran off. When his stitcher breaks he resorts to using an old pedal powered stitcher that’s been handed down for generations. The shoes he repairs on this stitcher allow him to become other people and see the world in a different way – and get into all sorts of trouble in the process.

Mistakes can trigger true character

At first Max is just entertaining himself by stepping into the shoes of others to see what their life is like. However, this little game gets him in big trouble. In an effort to reconcile what he realizes was a horrible mistake, he get’s himself into even bigger trouble. I don’t want to spoil the movie, so you’ll just have to watch it and learn the details yourself.

The important part here is how far a person will go to right a wrong. There’s a lot of little gems in this movie in terms of reaping the results of our actions, responsibility and relationships.

It’s about the message

The film doesn’t attempt to be a major motion picture blockbuster. It’s funny and relatable. Sandler does a great job playing an ordinary melancholy man who gradually begins to find the guts to step outside his comfort zone and fight for a good cause. The movie has depth and charm, and contrary to the critics views it’s well put together.

It’s a comedy, some call it a fantasy, but Sandler and the rest of the cast make it believable. Some folks got upset by the stereotypical characters, but that’s part of what makes it entertaining. We don’t need to get too deeply into the psyche of all the characters because that’s not the point of this movie. It’s all about Max finding his true self and the wild ride he goes on to do that.

Highly recommended for PG-13 audiences. Some brief nudity and violence. Available on Netflix.
