Sunday Notes 7/7/13 – Balance

Your Life in Balance

Last week on Sunday we began a new series called “Your Life in Balance”. We get out of balance when we forget our most essential priorities. Pastor Heather spoke about the tendency to be overscheduled and overwhelmed.

When we are overwhelmed by life’s demands it’s hard to find space for God. Everyone needs time in their life to wonder and contemplate, and to be at peace. It takes courage to slow down, to say no to the multitude of possibilities, and to choose our priorities wisely.

“Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” – Romans 12:2

There are a lot of circumstances that we can not control in life, but we do have control over our time, our thoughts and our actions. Choosing to spend time with God gives us the mental and emotional space to clarify our priorities.

“Be still and know that I am God” – Psalm 46:10

Pursuit of Happiness

Everyone is struggling to gain happiness but happiness can not be found without emotional balance. Spiritual maturity goes hand in hand with emotional health. If we find ourselves annoyed, irritated and complaining all the time it is a sign that our hearts need to grow. To illustrate this point we watched this short but poignant video:

“Salt and the Lake” expresses the importance of perspective in finding happiness or inner peace. Learning how to be grateful in any circumstance is the path toward spiritual maturity and emotional balance. That is easier said than done as we have patterns of thought that can easily trip us up and send us down a different road.

Thoughts that can make you unhappy…

  • Theirs is better
  • I want more…and more
  • If it’s not black it must be white
  • If it’s not perfect it’s no good
  • Why is this always happening to me?
  • I’m not going to like this
  • If it’s wrong it must be my fault

It’s not easy to be content when we have difficulties, but the only thing we can truly control is the way we think. The value of religion is in the education of our minds and hearts toward a spiritually mature and emotionally balanced way of thinking that leads to contentment and inner peace.
